seti Geschrieben 28. Januar 2005 Teilen Geschrieben 28. I know many of you have seen messages on other groups about a site advertising a toolbar that will find designs (free and for sale) and download them for your at no charge. However, this is a serious situation and I would hate for someone who has not received these notices to go unwarned. First of all this isn't a lecture about copyright do's and don'ts. I'm pretty sure most of you know that issue inside and out. This is an important notice about what is going on with some illegal sites and pirated designs. Trojans and worms are being placed in illegal downloads, illegal pirated designs being sold on Ebay, and now, on this latest website. The trojans do more than just open up your computer to design pirates. Any username and passwords, identification, or financial information you have stored on your computer can be stolen just as easily. Trojans and worms are being developed now so that it takes an average of 4 minutes from the time you get the trojan for the damage to be done and your information and files to be taken. 4 minutes. This latest Trojan on this "embroidery tool" site is not detectable by most antivirus programs, spyware programs, or trojan checkers. It is what one might call a "designer" trojan. Written for a target group of people, with a relatively small population, a designer trojan can go undetected for a long time until it is submitted to security program developers. Luckily, some designers were very savvy and suspicious and they submitted the files from this latest scam to http://www.kaspersky.com/remoteviruschk.html. Kaspersky Antivirus has confirmed this as a trojan. Supposedly, they will have their virus definitions updated by tomorrow and then you can go to the link above and do a free scan. This person in China who put up this site with this tool has been at this a very long time. When one site gets shut down, he sets up yet another. But he is not the only one using "designer" trojans and worms in illegally uploaded software and designs to gain access to other's computers! And you might not ever know that you were infected because remember, these trojans and worms are not known to Antivirus/Trojan detecting softwares. In other words, if Norton antivirus is unaware of the trojan, it cannot develop a response to it. Because we are a relatively small group of people in the computing world, that means a designer virus, trojan, or worm can be around for a long time without detection. How do you know the groups you belong to are on the up and up? Are respected designers members and contributors? Do they post their own messages and advertise their sites? A yes answer would be a good indicator the group is safe. You can always go to the designer's site and email them directly to inquire about a group. Some warning signs: Massive collections of designs, blatant talk of trading or sharing on groups, requests for designs to be shared, etc. Also, Ebay should ring major warning bells. 98% of the designs sold on ebay are pirated copies, some of which I know contain trojans. Designers regularly do evidence buys and this has been determined. There are a very few legitimate sewing dealerships selling on Ebay. Their sets are advertised as sealed, new cards and they show the packaging...the prices are also what you might expect rather than a few dollars. There are a few designers selling their designs on Ebay. I realize this makes for a very confusing situation for consumers and that is most unfortunate. If you recognize a designer's work on ebay, go to their site and email to ask if the designs sold on Ebay are legitimate. One clue to a legitimate sale will be that the price at auction will be in line with the price on the designer's site. One other caution on purchasing Ebay designs. The law says that if you purchase infringing material, the copyright holder can seek damages from you. This is because the law says that ignorance of the situation is not an excuse. In fact, some major companies have gone to not only seeking damages from the sellers of infringing material, they are also seeking damages from winning bidders. I was surprised to learn that, but it is on the best authority. Many of you will often go and look at a site with the intention of reporting this to a designer. You are trying to be helpful to us and we all appreciate that. However, it seems like the malicious activity has risen to a level so that help of this kind may be dangerous to anyone even visiting these sites out of curiosity. The trickery and sneakiness in attempting to illegally obtain files is becoming more and more twisted. While all of us really do appreciate our customer's appreciation and time in trying to help us with copyright infringement, please protect yourself and do not visit these sites. It goes without saying that illegally posted sets pose the same threats to computers. I do want to point out that the embroidery download tool in question is not the same as a program called Design Toolbar. Designers would really prefer that the Design Toolbar not be used either because we use samples to pull traffic to our sites so that people can view our products and this program circumvents our use of sample designs as advertisements for our merchandise. In fact, designers are just now learning about this program and many are pulling their samples because of it. We are currently checking to see how secure our exclusive samples are and will evaluate that situation in the next few days. I would seriously suggest that you scan your computer at the following site if you have even been to that embroidery download tool site. They have a free online scan. http://www.kaspersky.com/remoteviruschk.html Here are the files that the trojan creates on computers: Grab.exe - 69632 bytes NortonApp.exe - 208896 bytes (same as Syscker) SYSFIXT.DLL - 2596 bytes Syscker.exe file Again, we thank you all for your patronage. We in no way want to come across as lecturing you about what is right or wrong....that has been done enough in other venues. However, we are deeply concerned about our customer's security. These trojans go way beyond messing with design files. Your financial and personal information could be at risk, so please ask questions if you need to. I'm sure we will all pitch in and answer them as soon as possible or post further clarifications to common questions.
